Reviews for A Backpack And A Bit Of Luck

A Backpack and a Bit of Luck is a delightful collection of stories and personal journeys taken by a traveller who reognises with instinctive pleasure the fact that sometimes, life just happens—stories that border on the introspective and sometimes hilarious but always unique charms of the traveller who has often set out with “no real sense of direction.” With her backpack and a fair bit of luck, Zhang has clocked enough mileage into a book that will prove appealing to readers who enjoy spontaneity and the intangible charm that lies within the human capacity for adventure.
- Travel Magazine

This lovely collection of stories is written on the back of many journeys across Europe and Asia, with encounters that range from the hilarious to inspiring. Zhang is a Malaysian author with an excellent ear for dialogue and accents. What distinguishes her encounters is the sense that, though we may be living in a smaller and smaller world, travel (especially the bare-bones, down-and-out variety) will show that the opposite is true as well – there is more to life than what we encounter every day.

A fantastic read. Full of surprising twists and turns that leave the reader smiling.

'A Backpack and A Bit of Luck' is funny, absorbing, witty, original, written alluringly. Transports the reader to the 'here and now' of the writer. A must-read book for anyone interested beyond one's nose, a celebration of being alive, giving and taking, an ode to travel!

I enjoyed reading Zhang Su Li's 'A Backpack and A Bit of Luck' very much. She writes so well it is easy to imagine myself along with her in her travels. I found myself smiling and laughing and cheering the 'ordinary' heroes in her stories. I have since recommended it to my friends. I hope Zhang will write more books!

Zhang Su Li writes from first hand experience and from the heart. A contemporary story-teller, she is like a master-chef who dishes her art with penetrating clarity, power and rasa. Su Li is definitely one of Malaysia's potent writers to watch for.

Zhang Su Li is an independent and admirable writer. Her book, 'A Backpack and A Bit of Luck' is culturally well researched and presented with humour in a most splendorous way. Su Li’s extensive travel and people experience shine through. It makes you want to keep on reading.

Zhang Su Li is indeed a creative and accomplished writer having honed her skills in copywriting as well as in travel writing. It's not easy to be noted as a freelance writer but Su Li made it to the book shelves when a well known publisher published her book 'A Backpack and A Bit of Luck'. Her passion is in writing and I have no doubt she has some useful skills which she can impart to other writers and those who want to take up writing seriously.
